No grid-wide roll out
• Use of storage facilities to ease up renewables integration.
• Test of an aggregation IT portal (Alstom-GE).
• Islandings for provisional power supply in specific areas to strengthen resilience.
Further development needed before roll out
• Development of a first generation of MV/LV “smart” substations with extended measurement functions.
• Load shedding on 300 customers (housing, businesses and storage): some difficulties in using flexibilities to address LV constraints (value for distribution grid is subject to local and provisional factors).
Grid-wide roll out ongoing
ACHIEVEMENTS AND LESSONS LEARNED
• Optimise grid operation when PV generation is scaled up.
• Associate consumers to energy demand management.
• Research and experiment the technical and business case for electricity storage in batteries.
• Testing “temporary” islanding.
• Testing solutions for consumption and DER generation forecasts.
OBJECTIVES
300 customers, 220 household customers for demand response, 80 household customers for PV and storage
2012-2016

• In the summer, deferral of consumption from 12:00 to 4pm (25%/customer on average, ie 5% of excess consumption in the area)
• In the winter, decrease of peak time consumption from 6pm to 8pm (21%/customer on average ie 2% of substation power).
• Contribution of Linky infrastructure in the implementation of smart solutions was confirmed
• In order to lift constraints on the LV grid, flexibility portfolios must include a statistically relevant customer basis and offer the right amount of power at the right time and right place.

A closer look on some major feedback
• The battery + converter couple, together with local PV generation, enabled an islanding for five hours.
• Islanding requiring complex technical solutions (storage, break-up mechanisms, advanced metering tools, management algorithms…) at relatively high cost.
• Solution could prove relevant for remote locations or sites with unsteady power supply.
